How to Charge Your Tesla in Australia: Complete 2025 Guide

How to Charge Your Tesla in Australia 2025 Guide — Tes Accessories
Everything you need to know about charging your Tesla in Australia — home charging setup, public Type 2 stations, Superchargers, cables and adapters explained.

Australia's EV charging network has expanded rapidly, but navigating it confidently requires understanding which connector your Tesla uses, where you can charge, and what to carry. This guide gives you a practical overview of how to charge your Tesla across Australia in 2025.

What Connector Does Your Tesla Use?

All Teslas sold in Australia use the Type 2 (Mennekes IEC 62196) connector for AC charging — home, public AC stations, and destination chargers. This is the Australian and European standard, meaning your Tesla plugs directly into the vast majority of public AC charging stations without an adapter. For DC fast charging, Australian Teslas use the CCS2 connector at Superchargers and public rapid chargers. Supercharger stations have a built-in CCS2 cable — no user-supplied cable needed.

  • AC charging: Type 2 connector (all home and public AC stations)
  • DC fast charging: CCS2 at Superchargers and rapid chargers (cable at station)
  • Older regional and caravan park stations: may be Type 1, requiring a Type 1 to Type 2 adapter

Home Charging: Your Daily Method

Charging at home overnight is the cheapest and most convenient method. A dedicated 7kW single-phase wallbox adds around 40km of range per hour — enough to fully recharge overnight from near-empty. Connect it to your car with a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. A 22kW-rated cable is the smart choice even on a single-phase supply: it's backward compatible with any AC supply, future-proofs your setup, and your Tesla limits AC charging to 11kW automatically so you can't overload the car. Use the Tesla app to schedule charging for off-peak hours and cut running costs significantly.

  • 7kW single-phase wallbox: approximately 40km range per hour
  • 22kW three-phase: approximately 60km per hour (Tesla limits AC input to 11kW)
  • 22kW Type 2 cable: backward compatible with any supply, future-proof choice
  • Schedule off-peak charging in the Tesla app to reduce electricity costs

Public Charging and Road Trips

Tesla's Supercharger network is Australia's fastest public charging option — V3 Superchargers deliver up to 250kW, adding approximately 250km in 15 minutes. Superchargers are now open to non-Tesla EVs in Australia. For public AC stations (shopping centres, hotels, council car parks), you must bring your own Type 2 cable — most AC stations don't supply one. A 5-metre Type 2 cable gives comfortable reach without awkward angles. For regional trips, carry a Type 1 to Type 2 adapter for caravan parks and older highway stations that haven't upgraded to Type 2.

  • Supercharger: built-in cable, up to 250kW, payment via Tesla app
  • Public AC Type 2: bring your own Type 2 cable — 5 metres recommended
  • Type 1 stations (regional): Type 1 to Type 2 adapter required
  • Charge to 80% daily; use 100% only before long road trips

Two items cover 99% of Australian charging scenarios: a 22kW Type 2 cable and a Type 1 to Type 2 adapter. Carry both and you're prepared for any charging situation across the country.
