Type 2 Open-Ended EV Charging Cable — 22kW, 32A, for Wallbox Installation

The Type 2 Open-ended EV Charging Cable 22kW is designed for permanent hardwired EV wallbox installations in Australia — rated to 32A (22kW three-phase), IP65 weatherproof, with a Type 2 IEC 62196-2 connector on the EV end and bare wire terminals on the charger end for licensed electrical connection. This is the cable type fitted into dedicated residential and commercial EV charger units during installation.

For Tesla owners, the Type 2 connector on this cable connects to Tesla Model 3 (all variants, 2019–present) and Tesla Model Y (all variants, 2021–present including Juniper 2025+) via a Type 2 to NACS adapter. Non-Tesla Type 2 EVs — BYD Atto 3, BYD Seal, Polestar 2, MG ZS EV, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Hyundai IONIQ 6, Kia EV6, Audi e-tron, BMW iX and Nissan Leaf — connect directly without an adapter. One cable covers every Type 2 EV in the Australian market.

IP65 protection (fully dust-tight and water-jet resistant) and a -30°C to +50°C operating range make this cable suitable for permanent outdoor installation at Australian residential and commercial properties — coastal environments, high-UV Queensland, or alpine Victorian conditions. The 5-metre length covers standard wallbox-to-vehicle distances. Requires licensed electrical installation only.

Prefer a ready-to-use plug-in cable? See the standard Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable. Tesla owners will also need a Type 2 to Tesla adapter. Browse the full Tesla charging cable range at Tes Accessories.

Q: What is a Type 2 open-ended EV charging cable?

A: A Type 2 open-ended cable has a Type 2 (IEC 62196-2) EV connector on one end and bare wire terminals on the other. The bare end is hardwired by a licensed electrician into a dedicated EV wallbox. This is the standard cable used in fixed residential and commercial EV charger installations in Australia where a permanently installed, tethered cable is required.

Q: Do I need a licensed electrician to install this cable in Australia?

A: Yes. In Australia, all dedicated EV charger installations must be performed by a licensed electrician. The bare wire end must be connected to the wallbox's internal terminal board by a qualified electrical contractor. This cable is not suitable for self-installation under any circumstances.

Q: What is the difference between an open-ended cable and a Type 2 to Type 2 cable?

A: A Type 2 to Type 2 cable has IEC 62196-2 connectors on both ends — it is user-pluggable and portable, for use between your EV and a public charging station. An open-ended cable has bare wires on one end for permanent electrical connection inside a wallbox by an electrician. Open-ended cables are for fixed installations; Type 2 to Type 2 cables are portable.

Q: Is this cable compatible with Tesla Model Y?

A: Yes. Once installed, the Type 2 connector end connects to Tesla Model Y (via a Type 2 to NACS adapter). Tesla Model Y supports up to 11kW AC; the 22kW cable is fully backward compatible. The vehicle's onboard charger controls its own draw rate automatically.
