Tesla Model Y Mud Flaps Australia — Do You Need Them and How to Fit Them

Mud flaps are one of the most overlooked accessories for Tesla Model Y owners — until the first stone chip appears on the front bumper or rocker panel. Tesla's flush-fitting aerodynamic design means there's minimal coverage over the wheel arches compared to traditional cars. Australian roads, even in metro areas, throw up significantly more debris than many overseas markets.
Why Model Y Needs Mud Flaps
- The flush wheel arch design provides less natural stone chip protection than most petrol cars
- At highway speeds, front tyres can throw rocks directly at the rear door sills
- Tesla's white paint (the most common colour in Australia) shows stone chip damage very clearly
- Gravel driveways and car parks are common in suburban Australia — even short exposures generate chips
No-Drill Fitment — Why It Matters
The best Model Y mud flaps use factory mounting points that already exist in the wheel arch and bumper areas. No drilling required means:
- No risk of rust at drill points
- Reversible — remove cleanly if you sell the car or prefer the stock look
- Takes 20–30 minutes total to fit front and rear sets
- No voiding any warranty considerations from modification
Juniper vs Pre-Juniper Fitment
The Model Y Juniper (2024+) updated the front bumper design. This changes the factory mounting points for front mud flaps — pre-Juniper flaps will not clip correctly to the Juniper front bumper. Rear flaps are less affected. Always confirm your build year before ordering and look for explicit Juniper fitment in the product description.
TPE vs Plastic Mud Flaps
TPE (thermoplastic elastomer): Flexible, won't crack in cold, absorbs impact without shattering. Best for general use. Holds shape in Australian heat without warping.
Hard plastic: More rigid, can crack if hit by large debris or in very cold conditions. Less ideal for Australian conditions.
TPE is the recommended material for Australian climate — it handles temperature extremes and UV exposure better than standard ABS plastic.
Do You Need Front Only or All Four?
Front flaps protect the rear door sills from tyre throw. Rear flaps protect the rear bumper from the rear tyres. If budget is a consideration, front flaps deliver the most protection. A full set covers all four corners for complete coverage.
