Charging your Tesla in Australia can be confusing — there are multiple connector standards, different charger speeds, and not all adapters are compatible with every network. This guide explains everything you need to know about Tesla charging adapters in Australia so you can charge confidently wherever you go.

Understanding Australian EV Charging Standards

Australia uses two main charging connector standards:

  • Type 2 (Mennekes) — the standard for AC charging (home and public slow/fast chargers)
  • CCS2 (Combined Charging System) — the standard for DC fast charging at public rapid chargers

Tesla vehicles sold in Australia (Model Y and Model 3 from late 2022 onwards) come with a built-in CCS2 port, which accepts both Type 2 AC charging and CCS2 DC fast charging directly — no adapter needed for most situations.

What's Included With Your Tesla?

New Tesla deliveries in Australia include a Mobile Connector with a Type 2 plug for charging at home. However, many owners upgrade to a faster home charging solution or need adapters for specific networks.

Type 2 EV Charging Cables

For charging at public Type 2 stations (common at shopping centres, hotels, and workplaces), you need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Key specs to look for:

  • 7kW (32A single-phase) — suitable for most public AC chargers
  • 22kW (32A three-phase) — for faster charging where three-phase power is available
  • IP55 rating — weatherproof for outdoor use
  • CE and TUV certified for Australian compliance

Tes Accessories stocks both 7kW and 22kW Type 2 cables in 5m and 7m lengths.

CCS2 DC Fast Charging

Tesla's Australian Supercharger network and most third-party DC fast chargers (Chargefox, Evie, BP Pulse) now use CCS2 connectors. If your Tesla has a built-in CCS2 port, you can plug directly in without any adapter.

GBT Adapter

GBT (GB/T) is the Chinese charging standard. If you have a grey-import Tesla or an EV originally spec'd for the Chinese market, a GBT adapter lets you use Australian Type 2 AC infrastructure. Tes Accessories stocks GBT adapters compatible with these vehicles.

Home Charging Setup

  1. Install a dedicated Type 2 wall outlet (32A) by a licensed electrician
  2. Use a quality Type 2 charging cable (7kW minimum)
  3. Consider a wall-mounted EVSE for smart charging features

A 7kW home charger will fully charge a standard Model Y overnight — approximately 8-10 hours from near empty.

Charging on the Road in Australia

  • Tesla Supercharger — fast, reliable, exclusive to Tesla (CCS2 in Australia)
  • Chargefox — largest network, mix of AC and DC chargers
  • Evie Networks — DC fast chargers on major highways
  • BP Pulse — growing network at BP service stations
  • NRMA — regional NSW and ACT coverage
